The Weekend in Review

How interesting or Boring was your weekend!!?? As for me it was a mixture of both.

Welcome to another edition of the WEEKEND IN REVIEW.

We start from the ever busy world of;
FOOTBALL
Reactions have continued to be divided after Saturday’s tough lunch hour affair between Manchester United and Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea went ahead with a Rudiger header but a double from Anthony Martial ensured United were almost running away with 3 point before Ross Barkely scored with what was almost the last action on the day.

The goal from Ross Barkely resulted in some altercation around the technical area between Jose Mourinho and one of Chelsea’s Assistant manager Marco Lanni who celebrated in front of the United technical area.

La Liga
In the Spanish La Liga it was straight victory for Barcelona against Sevilla but it came at a cost as Lionel Messi had to leave the game after falling awkwardly on his hand. Barcelona roared to a 4-2 victory with Messi scoring and providing a wonderful assist, Luis Suarez also among the goal scorers. Latest report from the Catalonia club says Messi would be out for up to 3 weeks as extensive report showed he fractured a radial bone in his right arm.

For the Real Madrid side its Real trouble for them as they slumped to another loss against Levante. The game ended 2-1 with Rumors circulating Fiorentino Perez might get former Player Gutti to handle the team and Lopetugi sacked.

Still on issues concerning the Madrid Giants,Striker Karim Benzema has denied reports he was involved in an attempted kidnapping in Paris.
French publication Mediapart, claimed Benzema was involved in the alleged kidnap attempt of a friend who reportedly owes him 50,000 euros (£43,979).
The man allegedly said Benzema and others tried to load him into a black van on 7 October.
Benzema quickly took to twitter to dispel the Rumors he tweeted “Is this world serious, This must stop.”

This could be of surprise to you as the Eight-time Olympic sprint champion Usain Bolt has been offered a professional football contract by Australian side Central Coast Mariners, this is according to his agent Ricky Simms. The 32-year-old Jamaican, who retired from athletics in 2017, has been on trial with the A-League club. Simms said “I can confirm Usain has been offered a contract by Central Coast Mariners”.
Central Coast Mariners have refused to comment on the matter labeling it media speculations.

Enough of the European stories lets come back to the continent.

Enyimba Forward Bashir Abdulrahaman has expressed optimism that the people’s elephant can overturn a first leg deficit when the Nigerian side face Raja Casablanca in the return leg of their CAF Confederation Cup semifinal tie in Morocco this week. A 0-1 loss in the first leg in Aba three weeks ago has left Enyimba in a win or burst corner going into the return fixture this Wednesday.

The Women are not left out in this as The draw for the Women’s African Cup of nation was done yesterday in Ghana, the Awcon serves as the qualifiers for the Women’s world Cup to be held in France next year. And Nigeria are the top seeded team in Group B and they share the group with the South Africa, Zambia and Kenya.
Group A sees host Ghana entertain Algeria, Mali and Cameroon.
The Super Falcons first game would be against South Africa’s Bayana Bayana on the 18th of October.

Over to Northern Africa where Faouzi Benzarti who helped Tunisia qualify early for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations was sacked on Saturday and Faouzi has described his sacked as disappointing, humiliating and insulting.

Speaking via phone call to a Tunisia media outlet, Faouzi Benzarti said he was informed of his sack through a phone call. “I was informed of the news via a phone call, This is un-dignifying to me and to Tunisian coaches. They would not have done this had it been a foreign coach.

I gave everything up and came here, answering a call of duty when my country needed me. My results speak for themselves two wins away and one victory at home, this was uncalled for.

Remember the Wembley stadium was almost sold well not just yet,Former Football Association chairman Greg DYKE says the Opposition which caused the £600m sale of Wembley to Fulham owner Shahid Khan, to collapse is bizarre because the FA is led by old men.
“The council is living in the past, as it always has done, If I’d been chairman, I would have said it is the board’s decision. I don’t think the council is equipped to make this decision that is what the FA board is for.”
Shahid Khan withdrew an offer for the stadium because of a lack of support from FA Council members.

Kimi Raikkonen delayed Lewis Hamilton’s championship coronation till next week as he won the US Grand prix. Kimi Raikkonen had to wait 2,044 days to win a race.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen finished second with Hamilton coming 3rd and Vettel in 4th place. In the race’s decisive moments, Sebastian Vettel collided with Daniel Ricciardo while Raikkonen passed Hamilton off the line and Ferrari then elected not to pit the Finn under a Virtual Safety Car period. Hamilton after the race criticized the trucks in the US.

BASKETBALL
The Nigerian basketball league has rolled out the time table for domestic league of the Women Basketball Premier League, the Men’s Premier League and the National Division 1.
The 2018 League season will be held in an abridged format because of the short window before the FIBA Africa Zone 3 Club Championship Zonal elimination starting in November.
First Bank Women’s Basketball team of Lagos will begin their Premier League title defense on the 28th of October when the conference phase of the league starts.
With the recent admission of Mountain of Fire Women’s Basketball Club into the Premier League, 10 teams from the South West, South East and South South will converge on Enugu while 9 teams from the Savannah conference (North West, North East and North Central) will battle for supremacy in Abuja.
For the Men’s Premier League, Port Harcourt and Abuja will play host to teams from the Atlantic and Savannah Conferences respectively between November 13th and 17th.

TENNIS
John Isner has backed the change at Wimbledon aimed at preventing marathon matches, Isnar says the rule should be named after him.
The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) announced that from next year tie-breaks will be played at 12-12 in the final set.

All England Lawn Tennis Club Chairman Philip Brook said the time had come to introduce a tie-break method at a reasonable point, While we know the instances of matches extending deep into the final set are rare, we feel that a tie-break at 12-12 strikes an equitable balance between allowing players ample opportunity to complete the match to advantage. John Isnar hold the record of the longest game in Wimbledon history in 2010, beating Nicolas Mahut 70-68 in the final set which lasted 11 hours and too 3 days to complete.

MOTOR SPORT
Spaniard Marc Marquez dislocated his shoulder after winning a fifth MotoGP title his third in a row. Marquez broke his shoulder after receiving enthusiastic hugs from his Honda team and British rider Scott Redding his shoulder just popped out of the joint.
